Our client, an RTP area biotech, in collaboration with East Carolina University, is developing therapies to treat respiratory inflammation associated with long COVID and has an immediate need for a Research Scientist to join its team.

 The focus of the role will be conducting in vivo experiments in a BSL-3 lab. Client is targeting Ph.D. level candidates but will also consider MS/BS candidates with substantial experience working with small animals.  Biosafety Level 3 training will be provided.

 Things to Note:

  • This program is grant-funded and scheduled to last 18-24 months, with potential for extension.
  • The work will be performed in an ECU lab in collaboration with an ECU professor-led team.  Seek candidate in the Greenville area (or open to temporary relocation there).
  • This is a BSL-3 lab which will involve critical safety protocols.  Related experience is preferred but client is prepared to provide proper safety training.  Strict compliance is essential.
  • Experiments will be performed on small animals (primarily rodents).  Seek candidates who bring significant related experience (in industry or academia).  Virology and/or immunology bkgd preferred.
  • While core function will be the conduct and analysis of experiments, role will also involve assay development and/validation.  Related experience is preferred.

 Selected Duties:

  • Conduct single and repeat dosing pharmacology experiments of the company’s therapeutic in rodent models of respiratory infection. 
    • Perform all test article administration, biospecimen sampling, and tissue necropsy under BSL-3 containment to accomplish study objectives.
  • Assist with in vitro virological cell-based assays to establish viral titer.
  • Assist with the quantitative determination of key biomarkers (e.g., plasma and tissue cytokines) from harvested tissues.
  • Establish and qualify assay and test methods to accomplish project objectives for all bioanalytical and molecular techniques.
  • Provide sound judgment for interpretation of results and developing solutions for a broad range of challenges.
  • Plan and execute responsibilities that maintain developmental timelines and meet quality standards.

 Targeted candidate will offer a biological sciences degree (advanced degree preferred) such as Pharmacology, Physiology, Toxicology, etc. as well as 1+ year of experience with in vivo experiments .  Extensive work with small animals is essential.

Other priorities include:

  • Experience and/or desire to work in a BSL-3 lab
  • Hands-on experience in the conduct of in vivo pharmacology studies in rodents including some proficiency with dosing of rodents and necropsy for tissue collection.
  • Virology or immunology research experience preferred.
  • Proficiency with Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and statistical software including GraphPad Prism.
